Volunteer Week: It’s the Industry’s “Get Out and Do” Event

By | September 15, 2011

“Let’s do something together.”

Usually it’s coffee or lunch – but during Volunteer Week, hundreds of insurance folks will be doing more than that. They’ll be working side-by-side as volunteers in their local communities during Volunteer Week next month.

Organized by the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), Volunteer Week (Oct. 15-22, 2011) is the industry’s time to get out and get involved.

Volunteering isn’t easy, but IICF makes it easier because we:
— Contact charities and schools to find volunteer-friendly projects.
— Offer a list of projects that insurance teams can register to work on.
— Provide an online signup where leaders can register their company teams and get information for their specific project.

We aim to save volunteers steps so they can optimize the time spent hands-on working. Teams can register for projects at: www.iicf.org/volunteer.

There are more than 350 projects available. Geographically, they’re primarily in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area and in California. Teams can pick the projects they are interested in to support a wide range of needs, including disaster preparedness, education, the environment, housing, senior issues, women’s issues, and youth and children. Here’s a searchable database of projects at.

In 2010, more than 4,200 insurance employees logged time on 480-plus projects for a combined total of 20,420 hours during Volunteer Week in the Western and NY-Northeast divisions. A broad spectrum of industry employers—reinsurers, carriers, agencies, brokerage firms, consulting firms, law firms, trade associations and other industry-related companies—all had employees who pitched in.

“So many people in our industry want to—or already do—volunteer locally for needs they care about,” explains David Brinkman, chair of the IICF New York/Northeast division board and executive managing director of Aon Benfield. “Not only is volunteering a productive thing to do to help the community, it’s good for business because it develops leadership, teamwork and morale.”
