YouTube: More Than Stupid Cats and Cute Baby Videos

I’m sure you’ve seen a YouTube video. Most likely it’s one that’s gone viral, such as Charlie Bit My Finger, Kittens Inspired by Kittens, or David After Dentist. Thanks to these videos, I’ve become a YouTube junkie. Not just because I like to watch videos of stupid cats and cute babies talking to each other, but one other reason: tutorials!

My love of YouTube tutorials started a couple of years ago when I bought a whole pineapple. I had never cut a whole pineapple before and instead of trying to figure it out on my own, I googled it. The first two results were YouTube videos. I clicked on the first video and am now a pro at cutting pineapples. YouTube has become my go-to resource for tutorials and has taught me a variety of interesting life lessons. I now know how to disassemble a hot tub, create the perfect smokey eye, properly clean out my dryer, sew on a zipper without using a zipper foot, and make homemade donuts from scratch.

Many tutorials on YouTube are posted by everyday people sharing their common knowledge on a specific topic. But YouTube has been growing with tutorials made by business professionals about their expertise. Why is this? People want a personal connection. They want to put a face to a name, but more importantly, viewers want to see and hear how to do something from a professional in the industry. This connection will help build your brand and trust with the viewers. Insurance gurus have posted tutorials on YouTube about adjuster training, claims negotiations, how to become a top CSR, how to choose the right type of insurance, and tons more.

What kind of a tutorial would you do? That’s easy! Share what you know and position yourself as the expert. Start by uploading a successful presentation or tips you’ve given your clients. Create a video that explains your product or service. It will give prospective clients a connection with you and your business unlike over the phone or looking at your website. The best part of YouTube is it’s free to set up an account and simple to share links and post them on your website. You don’t need much high tech equipment either. I’ve uploaded videos made on my iPhone. People are ready to learn from you. All you need to do is upload a video.
