Defining Your Core Values – Small Agencies In Small Towns

The question I continue to be asked is how do I make sure that employees will take care of my customers the same as I do. We have previously discussed training the receptionist. However, before you consider adding the receptionist, you should establish your core values.

Now you already know your core values. But you cannot expect new staff to automatically know what they are. So it is important that you establish these in writing. These should be the very 1st item in your agency manual. Determining your agency’s core values is a very personal thing. While most agencies do the same things and are all alike in some ways, I often find them very different in their focus and drive.

I would suggest that you take time to do some reading, research and planning before actually developing your agency’s core values. I did a http://google.com search for core values. You will find a number of companies with links to their core values in this search.

I know they are not an insurance agency. I like looking outsider our industry for ideas. Especially at highly successful companies. While Zappos is not a small firm, it once was. Based on what I know about this company, I believe their core values have been the same since the beginning. Also, there is no rule that says you need a specific number of core values. If you only have 2 or 3 so be it. This is about quality and not quantity.

Disney doesn’t have a listing of core values but if you read about the company you find this to be the most important statement about who they are and what they do.

…to producer unparalleled entertainment experiences based on the rich legacy of quality creative content and exceptional storytelling.

I believe they have stated their core values and mission statement all in one sentence here.
