How To Be An Independent Broker/agent?

I was wondering if anyone of you seasoned professionals have any advice for a young broker with 2 years experience in the industry. I am curently working at a major broker and was wondering what would it take (time, money, knowledge) to eventually go out on my own? How is the compensation if you start your own agency or Risk Management consulting firm? Any advice on how to properly look into this or on what different routes i should take would be greatly appreciated. Also, should I get a specialization in a specific industry?
