Taking your Book of Business With you...

Post by CAInsurance »

Curious if anyine knows the laws related to a 1099 sub contracted Agent/Broker. If a 1099 person has built a book of business under the roof of a particular agency, what are the laws regarding marketing those clients directly if said person starts a new agency on their own???

Moving a book of business

If you signed a contract with your current firm that says they own the business, then to contact them directly would be a violation of that contract. It's really unethical, too.

If you don't have a contract, then you may have more leeway, but even so, your former employer could sue you for bad business practices.
