A policyholder did not keep their policies dating back to the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and does not even have the name of the insurer(s).

Any ideas on how to go about identifying the insurers and/or locating the policies?

Try to reconstruct the insurance carriers via certificates of insurance that may have been required for vendors, suppliers or for business contracts they performed in those years. If there were any contracts with state or local govt's, may find copies in their archives. Likewise, contacting the Risk Manager at a prior vendor or supplier may get copies ... assuming their record retention procedures keep them longer than your clients.
