Splitting Commissions

I am a licensed agent in Minnesota....Life, Health, Property & Casualty, but am not currently appointed with any company.
Is their a way for me to write a policy for someone, or can another agent write it and split the commissions with me even though I'm not appointed?
What the best way to initiate the process??
Thanks for any feedback.
