What did you have to do to get started?

The ones I taught were in-house classes for my employers. Basically all we did was ask the other employees if they wanted classes and which ones.

If you are starting an outside school I would think your first step should be to contact the various state insurance departments and determine their requirements for having your classes approved for CE. That is the biggest single issue with companies paying for the classes for their employees - double bang for the buck - training and CE.

I would also check your local market and see what types of providers are already out there, what they offer and if they are missing something that the insurance community in your area needs, pricing in the current market and locations of training.

Keep in mind that most states now allow CE to be obtained on line for a good portion of the required hours and only a small portion must be actual classroom. Even that has a broadened definition of "classroom".

If you would like to call and discuss it my number is 281-493-0305.

First and foremost you need expertise in the subject matter to be taught. I think most students are looking for someone with practical, long term experience and professional credentials. Couple that with teaching and speaking ability, so that your instruction is both informative and interesting.

Then there are the administrative details if you want to teach classes eligible for CE. You have to be approved by the applicable states as a CE provider, learn to make CE filings, get approved as a CE instructor, do follow-up rosters in accordance with CE law, etc.

As far as I know, each state has specific information that is required for licensing. Once you determine that you can develop the material for teaching.

You can probably get most of the information from Promissor.com. They are a nationwide internet based license testing company and they have sample manuals for each state that contracts with them.

You could also attend a licensing class in your area to get a feel for what's needed.

Let me know if I can help.

Joe Agent, you'll either need to be hired by an approved Pre-licensing Education Provider in your state or become one (in addition to being approved as an instructor). Check with your state's insurance commission as to the requirements. You can't just put out a shingle.

If you live in Dallas and are interested in teaching pre-license exam prep classes or CEs please let me know. I am hiring part-time instructors for both our Life & Health class (having your series 6 wouldn't hurt either) and our P&C classes.
