Presents for New Customers

I have an idea of sending a book (something like "insurance for dummies") or a gift card to AMC Theater to every new client. My partner though says, it's a stupid idea, and waste of money. Would do you think?

Why do you think your customers buy from you? Is it because of price? Is it because of your personal relationship with them?

If you sell on price then I don't see what good it would do. If they buy because of your personal relationship then a night at the movies might help cement the relationship.

If I was going to do it, I would try to find something fairly memorable. Not a paperweight that will just go in the trash. A night at the movies tends to make them think about you the whole time they are at the movie. Flowers always tend to register with females. Something that is actually useful for the home and isn't just thrown in the trash would be another possibility.

But then you also have to compare that expense with what it might have gained you if you had spent the same money on direct mail or something.

It's always about the perception of value by the buyer. Everything you do for a client must be perceived by the client as being valuable.

Re the book... Why not write your own article, white paper, or report? Give something of value and confirm to your client your own level of expertise.

The insurance book is no good. Insurance stuff is boring. The movie tickets are good but, don't give them to clients until they give you a referral. Clients need to earn the gifts.

Now you brought up a subject that deserves another thread. See my new thread on the subject.

Clients need to earn tickets. What if your car sales person sent you tickets? What would that do for you? Everything you spend money on needs to build your business and revenue.
