Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range

$120,600.00 - $199,100.00

As a Director, Data Management, you will lead strategies to promote effective data governance practices to ensure that data is consistent, trustworthy, and doesn't get misused. You will measure accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability of data to embody and promote Traveler's data culture values. Consulting with business partners, you will drive the adoption of data management, governance, and metadata policies, standards, and best practices in order to demonstrate the tangible value of strong data governance. You will provide leadership by setting priorities, assigning work and coaching team members in the support and adoption of data in an agile model.

The Director, Data Management position is a critical role within the Business Insurance Analytics & Research team responsible for leading Data Quality efforts across our Business Insurance portfolio. This person will support multiple relationships - partnering with Business Insurance, Enterprise, Technology, and other Data Management professionals across the organization to execute on our Data Quality Strategy and ensure adoption across BI.

We are looking for a dynamic, strategic thinker with data management experience from both a technical and business perspective. Primary responsibility for this person will be to lead our BI Data Institutional Knowledge (iKnow program) as well as our Root Cause Analysis efforts. The role will help drive adoption with our agile teams for our Data Management principles across BI, and drive outcomes that improve our data quality, efficiency, insights, and ability to solve business problems. The person must have a delivery mindset and work with the execution teams to ensure Data Quality standards are understood, planned for, achieved, reported on in terms of compliance and risks highlighted. This person will be critical to us moving from concept to execution in the Data Quality space.

What Will You Do?

Data Quality:

  • Drives strong understanding within our BI organization around key data quality capabilities - profiling, rules development, validation, outlier detection, monitoring, alerting & notification, stewardship workflow for data remediation, etc.
  • Leads our Root Cause Analysis and iKnow program efforts to develop a consistent framework to address data quality issues and scale our institutional data knowledge on our critical processes
  • Provides perspective on how to leverage data quality tools like Precisely, Abinitio, IBM InfoSphere, Informatica, Ataccama, Talend, etc.
  • Contributes and shapes a Data Quality Roadmap which optimizes people, processes and technology to improve our overall data quality maturity level.
  • Supports the development of a roadmap which focuses in on creating transparency around our data quality controls, tracking of data quality issues & remediation efforts that emerge, and development of a portfolio view around the health of our data.
  • Develops Data Quality policies, standards, and best practices as well as incorporating them into a governance framework and practice
  • Engages the Business Insurance community to ensure successful rollout, implementation and adoption of these Data Quality policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Develops training material, job aids and curriculum to leverage with our agile teams to elevate the importance of Data Quality in all aspects of our development life cycle.
  • Proactively provides guidance to strategic projects around ownership, stewardship, critical to quality acceptance criteria including accuracy, timeliness, validity, completeness, usage and availability of data.
  • Performs data quality analysis including complex data profiling; communicates results in meaningful way to support business understanding of issues and impacts
  • Works and influences the delivery of multiple execution/agile teams to ensure data quality standards are met consistently and reflected in our key performance indicators.


Governance:

  • Influences the expansion of our governance operating model; now, next and target state; supports the development of roles & responsibilities of our data stewards and business owners
  • Drives the discussion and collaborates with partners on the submission and review of any governance artifacts
  • Ensures data and information are handled in accordance with established laws, regulations and policies
  • Assists with the designing the creation, maintenance and governance of taxonomies and ensures its applicability to content and/or data


Metadata:

  • Supports awareness and training for the agile teams in applying metadata standards.
  • Supports the development of metadata documentation, data lineage, data transformation rules for key programs/initiatives.
  • Supports the development of a reference data management framework


Culture:

  • Articulates guiding principles and frameworks that align with the strategic vision
  • Supports our knowledge culture map development and training
  • Leverages tools, processes and workflows to capture knowledge, find information and maintain its relevance
  • Actively promotes a knowledge sharing culture and value proposition while generating awareness of initiatives throughout the organization


What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Excellent ability to use ETL / Data Integration tools, one or more Data platforms, and Cloud Computing Technologies and related emerging technology.
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following Tools and languages – SQL, Teradata, Python, Hive, MicroStrategy, Ab Initio, Messaging, NoSQL.
  • Ability to understand metadata management, including metadata management, lineage, and cataloging.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of management.
  • Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to break a problem down into manageable pieces, evaluate potential risks/alternatives, and implement effective, timely solutions.
  • Able to develop and leverage business and/or vendor partnerships, consult on business priorities, and optimize value through solution identification aligned with business objectives, goals, and future data direction.
  • Experience leading and managing complex projects.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage change, develop employees, and align resources to accomplish key objectives.
  • Advanced understanding of emerging trends and new technologies in knowledge management.
  • Strong understanding of overall physical and logical data model and of data relationships, mapping, lineage and business rules.


What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree or five years of relevant data and analytics, and/or data management experience.
