Republic, Southern States General Agency

Dallas-based Republic Companies Inc. (Republic) acquired Southern States General Agency Inc. (SSGA) from Unitrin Inc., effective July 9.

SSGA President Mickey Slaughter and his team joined the Republic organization. SSGA provides specialty commercial and personal lines property and casualty insurance products through independent insurance agents in Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Mississippi.

Delta General Agency

Delta General Agency has formed a professional liability division with specialized focus on medical malpractice coverage. Marla Timmons, senior health care and professional liability broker, will lead the division. Timmons will be based in Houston and guided by Dave Van Tiem, senior vice president. Timmons, with many years of insurance experience, has developed significant expertise in the health care segment of the industry in the last 10 years. She has worked for large brokerage firms such as Willis, Sedgwick James and Aon. Prior to joining Delta, Timmons was a senior health care broker for Aon’s Healthcare Practice Group.

Medical malpractice risks served by the new unit include: physicians, surgicenters, home health agencies, medical staffing agencies, specialty and community hospitals, medical clinics, imaging centers, and counseling/social service organizations.

Burns & Wilcox, IIA Arkansas

Burns & Wilcox received the 2007 Broker of the Year award from the Independent Insurance Agents of Arkansas (IIAA) at the association’s 106th annual convention in early June.

Broker of the Year is awarded to a company that meets the needs of independent insurance agents with professionalism, industry knowledge and market condition awareness. It is an annual award based on nominations from independent agents throughout Arkansas.

Burns & Wilcox was nominated from a field of 130 eligible companies. Matthew Carter, manager of the Arkansas office, accepted the award on behalf of Burns & Wilcox.

Engle Martin & Associates

National claims service provider Engle Martin & Associates Inc. is moving its Dallas and Houston offices.

The Dallas office is moving to 17304 Preston Road, Suite 740, Dallas, Texas 75252.

The Dallas office also includes a unit of Engle Martin Claims Administration Services, an independent third-party claims administrator serving the program business.

The Houston office will be located at 12946 Dairy Ashford Road, Suite 265, Sugar Land, Texas 77478.

Senior property adjuster Andy McRae will be joined by Jose Alfredo Rochin, property adjuster, along with support staff.

XL Insurance

XL Insurance opened a new regional office in Houston that will focus on providing XL Insurance clients, particularly marine and offshore energy businesses in the region, with local underwriting expertise and claims services.

Regional Marine Manager Diana Gladwell will direct the office’s activities. Gladwell has nearly 25 years of marine insurance experience.

XL Insurance’s Marine & Offshore Energy unit provides cargo, primary marine liabilities, excess marine liabilities, offshore energy, bluewater hull and brownwater hull insurance.
