Arthur J. Gallagher, Riley

Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. said it has acquired Riley & Associates Inc. in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Riley & Associates Inc. is a retail insurance broker that specializes in insurance coverage for the hospitality, moving and storage, transportation and marine industries.

Russell Parker and his associates will continue to operate in Mt. Pleasant under the direction of Mitchel Brashier, Southeastern Regional Manager of Gallagher’s retail property/casualty brokerage operation.

Kaufman Financial, Chesterfield

The H.W. Kaufman Financial Group, parent company of wholesale broker and underwriting manager Burns & Wilcox, has purchased Chesterfield Group Ltd., a London-based insurance broker and underwriting organization with companies in the UK, U.S. and Canada. The acquisition expands Kaufman Financial Group’s international insurance presence in the specialty insurance marketplace.

Included in the acquired group of companies is Van Wagoner Companies Inc., a managing general agency in Dallas, Texas. It will now operate as Burns & Wilcox.

Chesterfield Group Ltd.’s principal operating company is Chesterfield Insurance Brokers Ltd. Domiciled in the United Kingdom, the company is the group’s Lloyd’s of London broker. The acquisition also includes Chesterfield Canada Inc., a Canadian-based wholesale broker. This marks Kaufman Financial Group’s entry into the Canadian marketplace.

AmWINS, THB Group

Charlotte, North Carolina-based insurance wholesaler AmWINS Group Inc. has completed its previously announced acquisition of THB Group plc of London.

THB Group has three operating divisions: Thompson Heath & Bond Limited (a Lloyd’s broking operation that also has access to London and international markets), THB UK Limited and THB International Holdings Limited. Thompson Heath & Bond Limited comprises both wholesale and retail insurance divisions. Within THB UK Limited, THB Risk Solutions is a distributor of insurance programs, Cardinus Risk Management offers risk management services, and Unicorn Underwriting is a managing general agent. THB International Holdings Limited comprises overseas businesses acquired from PWS in 2008.

Frank Murphy, current chief executive of THB Group, retains that title while also becoming CEO of the AmWINS International Division.
