Swett, Southern Hospitality

In an expansion of its specialized program business, Swett & Crawford has acquired the assets of Griffin, Georgia -based Southern Hospitality Underwriters Inc. (SHU), a regional firm specializing in the limited service hotel/motel space.

SHU, founded in 1998, placed approximately $14.5 million in premium for 2012. The firm also places coverage for independent and assisted living facilities.

Brad Brown, president and founder of SHU, moves to Swett & Crawford to become the program’s sales Leader. Brown has more than 20 years of experience.

J. Neal Abernathy, president and CEO of Swett & Crawford, said the firm expects to build on what SHU has achieved by adding additional territories and products.

Ironshore, ERR

Ironshore Inc. has acquired Excess Risk Reinsurance (ERR) Inc., a managing general underwriter specializing in the Employer Stop Loss insurance sector. ERR will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ironshore Insurance Services LLC.

ERR is led by Steven M. Parker, president, and David Dausman, executive vice president, who will continue in executive positions under the new ownership.

Founded under the name AJD Insurance Consultants Inc., the company acquired its current name in 2001. Headquartered in Ridgeland, Mississippi, it also has offices in Boston and Denver.

Digital Insurance, Capital Benefits

Atlanta-based employee benefits agency Digital Insurance has acquired Tennessee’s Capital Benefits Group. It marks Digital’s first office in Tennessee. Capital Benefits Group, which has 800 clients and 16 staff members, has become part of Digital Benefit Advisors (DBA). Offices will continue to be located in Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. Capital Benefits Group President Harold Roe and his team have joined the DBA staff.

MEMIC, Florida

Portland, Maine-based workers’ compensation insurer The MEMIC Group will open its first Florida office in Tampa in the second quarter of 2013.

“There are strong business connections between our territories in the Northeast and the state of Florida,” said MEMIC President and CEO John T. Leonard.

In 2012, MEMIC opened offices in Weehawken, New Jersey and West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. The company’s headquarters remain in Portland, Maine with additional offices in Manchester, New Hampshire; Glastonbury, Connecticut; and Albany, New York.
