Jacksonville-based MedMal Direct Insurance Co. has received its certificate of authority from the Georgia Department of Insurance and has officially launched operations as a medical malpractice insurance carrier in Georgia. MedMal Direct sells medical malpractice insurance directly to physicians.

AmWINS

North Carolina-headquartered wholesale broker AmWINS Group Inc. has combined its various non-standard auto entities to create AmWINS Specialty Auto (ASA). The combined entities include Newport General Agency (acquired in April 2010), American Southwest Insurance Managers, Excel General Agency, Statewide Claim Service and Oakwood Software Insurance Solutions (all acquired in February 2011). The combined operation will retain separate brand names within the Texas marketplace but leverage the new ASA outside Texas. The combined firm will be led by Jim S. Whited, chairman; David Scruggs, president; Debra Williams, executive vice president, claims; Dennis DiCapua, executive vice president, product management and chief risk officer; and Chuck McMillan, vice president, sales.

Keystone Insurers, Westan Insurance

Keystone Insurers Group has added Union City, Tenn.-based agency Westan Insurance Group Inc. as its 19th franchise partner in the state. Westan is a family-owned independent insurance agency with offices throughout western Tennessee.

MagMutual, S.C. Physician Assurance

Regional medical malpractice insurer MagMutual Insurance Co. has agreed to acquire South Carolina Physician Assurance Co., another medical malpractice insurance provider that is owned by the South Carolina Medical Association. It writes in South Carolina only.

The Atlanta-based MagMutual offers medical malpractice coverage in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. In 2011, it reported it had 17,305 physician policyholder-owners and $253 million in gross written premium, down from $296 million in 2010. It reported $594 million in policyholder surplus in 2011.
