Amish Appeal

“We think there are important Kentucky constitutional issues that need to be resolved by this case.”

William Sharp, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney representing Amish men in Kentucky who have been ordered to pay fines for refusing to post reflective triangles on their horse-drawn carriages. Nine Amish men were ordered to jail last month for refusing to pay fines associated with the state-mandated emblems, which the men say are a violation of their religious beliefs. The state Supreme Court has not yet decided if it will hear their appeal.

Florida PIP

“The bottom line is that if PIP is not transformed this year, Florida will continue to lead the country in questionable automobile claims, inviting even more criminal activity and putting Florida’s consumers and businesses at risk.”

Paul Blume, lobbyist for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI), speaking about the need to reform the state’s fraud-ridden personal injury protection auto insurance system. PCI urged Florida to allow more time for looking into suspicious claims, place a cap on attorneys’ fees and more closely regulate medical clinics to help reduce rampant fraud.

Alfa Ties

Klye McCaleb, an Alfa Insurance agent in Phoenix City, Alabama, commenting on Alfa’s decision to no longer underwrite single homeowners policies in Alabama. It will only provide coverage to homeowners who also place their auto coverage with the company.
