Disaster Experience

“We’ve had a lot of experience with this.”

—Todd Graves, the founder and CEO of a Baton Rouge, La.-based fast-food chain says experience with disasters served the company well after a tornado ravaged Moore, Okla. The Raising Cane’s in Moore was about a thousand feet from the tornado’s path. Graves said tornadoes are a relatively new experience for Raising Cane’s, but its six-member disaster response team — in place for years to deal with hurricanes – moved quickly to provide the satellite phones and generators and coordinate the task of feeding first responders.

A Complex Issue

“It’s a complex issue as diverse as the state is with the huge exposure that we have along the Gulf Coast.”

—Texas Gov. Rick Perry was noncommittal when asked if reform of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) would be added as an item in the special legislative session he called for in late May. Numerous TWIA reform bills were filed in the regular session but none made it through the legislative process. Perry acknowledged TWIA reform is needed but said he’s not inclined to add items without first making sure there’s a possibility lawmakers will actually pass legislation on them.
