Listen Safely

“The whole thing just got so lost, you know. So the audience, honestly, most of the time when I’m talking, they’re just talking to each other and they don’t listen.”

—A bus driver told National Transportation Safety Board investigators he did not show a six-minute safety video, which includes a description of emergency exits, and did not remember if he told students how to escape the bus before a collision with a tractor-trailer in California last year that resulted in a fire and killed 10.

‘Click It or Ticket’

“The evidence is inarguable – seat belts save lives.”

—N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo during his May 15 announcement launching a statewide crackdown on drivers and passengers caught without a buckled seat belt or transporting unrestrained children, as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign from May 18-31. In 1984, New York was the first state to pass legislation requiring seat belt use.

Bank and Trust

“We think that the jury ruled for Mrs. Morriss because the evidence demonstrated the bank failed to live up to the most basic obligation to take care and safe-keep the assets of the trust.”

—Jim Bennett, attorney for Barbara Burton Morriss of Missouri who sued Wells Fargo Bank alleging it mismanaged her family trusts, costing her tens of millions of dollars. A Missouri jury agreed and awarded her $77 million in damages.

Beauty Breach

“We are working diligently to address the issue and to care for any customers who may have been affected by the incident.”

—Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. CEO Chris Brickman, after the company in mid-May confirmed it had suffered a data breach, the second in just over two years. The Denton, Texas-based beauty products seller notified customers that it was investigating reports of unusual activity on payment cards used at some U.S. locations.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

“We are concerned that taking a uniform regulatory approach that treats insurers more like banks may actually encourage new risk-taking in the insurance industry.”

—Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty in testimony before U.S. lawmakers on April 28 and 29. McCarty spoke on both domestic and international insurance issues, stressing the importance of keeping insurance regulations decided by individual states rather than taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
