New Resolutions for Industry Publication

By | January 12, 2004

The old saying goes that this time of the year is an opportunity to start making resolutions for the new year. Well, we at Insurance Journal have some plans of our own for 2004, and we’re starting with this premiere issue of Insurance Journal Southeast.

Started in 1923, Insurance Journal has been a regional property/casualty magazine serving independent agents first in California and the West then offering news coverage for agents in the Texas/South Central region beginning in 1995.

With this issue, Insurance Journal has expanded its readership to include the entire nation. We have added magazines in the Southeast, East, and Midwest.

The Southeast issue will focus on nine states — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Publisher Mark Wells, who took over the magazine following the death of his father Mark Wells Sr. in 1970, was determined to see to it that independent agents had a source to turn to for the latest legislative news, products they could use in their everyday jobs or a place to profile both important individuals and companies in the industry.

Decades later, Insurance Journal continues that mission, including an international Web site, www.insurancejournal.com.

In this first Southeast issue, readers will find a Q&A with Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine. Having served nine years, Oxendine has been a steadying influence when it comes to insurance matters in the Peach State.

In the interview, he offers his thoughts on the state’s workers’ comp market, state regulation, fighting fraud and more.

Also in this issue, you will find an update on the latest efforts to reform Mississippi’s tort reform system as well as a Parting Shots column from Cecil Pearce of the American Insurance Association, who looks at the reported growing influence of the trial bar in Florida politics and much more.

Along with news and features, issues will feature department news including People & Places, Business Moves, New Markets, Fraud Roundup, Ratings, Tech Products and more. You will also periodically find agency management and agency insights columns that will help agents build an even better agency and take a look at unique, outstanding agencies and how they built their success.

As with all publications, the success of the magazine is driven by the readers and advertisers. If you have an idea for a story or want to get your message out to agents and companies, let us hear from you.

We hope you like your Insurance Journal Southeast issue, and we’ll talk to you soon.
