American Insurance Association Unveils New Brand

August 6, 2001

The American Insurance Association (AIA) has unveiled a new brand identity.

AIA, an advocacy group for the property and casualty insurance industry, has been in existence for over 130 years — one of the longest continuously operating national trade associations in the United States.

“Today’s insurance marketplace is expanding globally and here at home, as insurance companies stake their ground in the newly modernized financial services industry. AIA continues to be a prominent voice in shaping public policy that affects our members in this new era,” said Robert E. Vagley, AIA president. “As part of AIA’s ongoing evolution and desire to keep pace with the ever-changing world around us, we realize the importance of having a contemporary brand that better reflects the AIA of today and tomorrow.”

“Our new mark emphasizes the most important word in our name: ‘insurance,'” said Vagley. “Our job at AIA is to educate public policy leaders about the business of insurance. We think our new look appropriately represents who AIA is and always will be: forceful and results-oriented advocates for property and casualty insurers.”

AIA’s roots date back more than 130 years to the establishment of the National Board of Fire Underwriters in 1866. Today’s AIA was established in 1964 when the National Board of Fire Underwriters merged with the Association of Casualty and Surety Companies and the former American Insurance Association. According to the Association Handbook of the American Society of Association Executives, AIA is one of the oldest associations in the United States.

“The old AIA logo had been in use for more than 40 years, and originally represented three organizations joining as one,” said Vagley. “The meaning of our former mark has faded over time and no longer communicates what AIA is as an organization.

“As AIA steps upward and outward, this new look will better signify what we represent and where the industry is moving,” Vagley concludes.

The AIA, headquartered in Washington, D.C., represents more than 370 major insurance companies that provide all lines of property and casualty insurance and write more than $77 billion annually in premiums.
