Hard Market Common Theme for Spring Conventions

April 15, 2002

Spring is in the air, and that means conventions, conventions and more conventions for insurance agents and brokers.

The first is the upcoming Orange County “I” Day, to be held April 23 at the West Coast Anaheim Hotel in Anaheim. This annual event, organized by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Orange County (IIABOC), will present its theme “The Hard Market: It’s a Whole New Ball Game!”

“We have a tremendous program, which involves all areas of reinsurance, which is very critical to standard insurance companies,” says John Karpierz, chairman of this year’s event. “All of us who are in this business are really interested in what’s happening with this marketplace that’s in crisis, going up and up and up. We have no idea as of yet what’s going to happen with the insurance related to the terrorism exclusion.”

The event opens with two CE Hours; the first being “COBRA Compliance” presented by Jason Culp, senior sales representative for CobraPro, Word & Brown. The second CE Hour will be “Why Use a General Agent?” presented by Lisa Rehburg, executive director of field sales, for Word & Brown. Following the CE Hours will be a luncheon and panel discussion, “Reinsurers: Is the Ball in Their Court?” featuring Steven A. Cerra, Ph.D. of International Medical Management, Pat Denser of Collins, and Anthony J. Anastanio of GeneralCologne Re. Steve Young, general counsel of IBA West, will moderate the panel.

Registration costs $50 and includes lunch, CE Hours, and the exhibit hall. Additional persons from each agency may register at $40. CSR’s are invited to attend the exhibit hall and CE classes at no charge after one paid registration and advance CE registration. Registration is available through the IIABOC Web site, www.iiaboc.com.

The Latin American Agents Association (LAAA) are organizing their third trade fair and convention, “La Feria de Seguros 2002,” to be held May 2-5 at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel. The theme for this year’s event will be “Information in a Hard Market.”

“For the first time, we actually have representation from not only auto agents and brokers, which is what we started with, but we have incorporated health and life agents, as well as commercial entities that are participating,” comments Andre Urena, president of the LAAA.

The event opens with a hospitality suite presented by Michelman & Robinson, LLP. The following day will feature CE credit seminars ranging from topics such as assigned risk to legal responsibility for agents and brokers. John Madrid from the California Department of Insurance (CDI) will present an application and renewal workshop.

The third day of the event will highlight a market breakfast featuring special industry guests, including CEO’s of major insurance companies. “La Feria de Seguros” trade fair kicks off, hosting over 50 insurance companies and vendors. The convention closes on May 5.

“For only $109, if they sign up ahead of time, agents will get a 12-hour CE course book, and that includes the examination portion of it, and they get access to all the events. They can potentially earn close 24 CE credits if they attend the entire event on Friday,” says Urena.

Registration is available through the LAAA Web site, www.latinagents.com, or call (626) 444-0999.
