NAPSLO Interns At Work in Summer

August 19, 2002

The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) announced that eight college student are participating in its 2002 Summer Internship Program. The interns spend five weeks during the summer working with a NAPLSO member surplus lines insurance company and four weeks employed at a member wholesale broker/agent.

While at their host companies, the interns rotate through various departments and write a paper about their experiences with each organization. NAPSLO created the program in 1981 to attract new talent to the industry; since that time it has sponsored 140 interns. Many of those interns were subsequently hired by NAPSLO member companies.

Several of the 2002 interns will be selected to attend the 2002 NAPSLO annual convention in Boston. One will be chosen to receive the J.H. Blades Memorial Scholarship, with an additional three-week internship with a London member firm in summer 2003.

The NAPSLO annual convention is scheduled for October 6 – 10. Richard Holbrooke, former co-chairman of the terrorism task force for the Council on Foreign Relations will be a featured speaker. Holbrooke has served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. Ambassador to Germany and Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs. He was one of the chief negotiators for the Dayton Peace Accord that ended the war in Bosnia.

Holbrook will speak as part of the Derek Hughes/NAPLSO Educational Foundation Lecture Series.

Also featured at the convention will be Lou Dobbs, anchor and managing director of CNN’s LouDobbsMoneyline, who will speak on the current state of the economy.

Two panel discussions, “State of the Marketplace” and “A Financial Review of the Industry: Blue Sky or Dark Clouds?” are additional highlights of the meetings.

The application deadline for 2003 internships has changed to January 15, 2003. Students interested in applying for an internship may contact NAPSLO for an application or apply online at www.napslo.org.
