Nine college students from around the U.S. recently received scholarships from the Derek Hughes/National Association of Surplus Lines Offices Educational Foundation for the 2003-2004 school year. In addition to the $2,000 scholarships the Foundation has traditionally awarded it created a new scholarship fund, the Scott W. Polley Memorial Scholarship.

The Polley Scholarship was created with contributions and recognizes the impact Scott W. Polley, an active member of NAPSLO, had on the surplus lines industry. The two students receiving the Polley award are Kristen Hachtmann of Glen Gardner, N.J., attending Temple University, and Jennifer Usnik of Natchez, Miss. She attends the University of Mississippi.

Roland L. Wiegers Education Scholarships were given for the fourth consecutive year. The scholarship was made possible by a donation from the Scottsdale Insurance Company in honor of its founder and
chairman. Four students were awarded Weigers Scholarships: James Abraham, Prattsville, Ala., Troy State University; Christopher Peterson, Overland Park, Kan., Southwest Missouri State University; and Ashley and Lindsey Selegue, Gahanna, Ohio, Cedarville University.

The Herbert W. Kaufman Memorial Scholarship was added in 2001 from proceeds donated in memory of Herbert W. Kaufman. The Kaufman Scholarship recipient is David Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa. He attends Temple University.

Finally, the NAPSLO scholarship recipient is Jonathan McKenzie of Foley, Ala. McKenzie attends Troy State University.

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation established the scholarship program in 1998 for students studying majors that are related to a career in insurance. For scholarship eligibility, students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program, majoring in Actuarial Science, Business, Economics, Insurance, Finance, Management, Risk Management or Statistics. They must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above and entering freshmen must rank in the top 25 percent of their high school class or have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Students must submit a complete application, college transcript, essay and two letters of recommendation. The application can be accessed at www.napslo.org.

Previous scholarship recipients are eligible in subsequent years, but must reapply each year. Scholarship winners will be notified by mail and scholarship funds awarded will be forwarded to the student’s school for distribution.

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation has also established a grant program for colleges, universities and other educational institutions to obtain grants for the purpose of creating, conducting, expanding and promoting programs in insurance education, and developing and conducting projects related to the surplus lines insurance industry. The applicant institution must have an established insurance or risk management degree program or a representative number of insurance or risk management courses.

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation was established in 1991 by the NAPSLO Board of Directors.
