Texas seeing fewer insurance complaints

October 27, 2007

For the fourth year in a row Texans filed fewer complaints against their insurance companies with the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). The Insurance Council of Texas reported that TDI’s Consumer Protection division has received 10 percent fewer insurance complaints this year compared with last year — the lowest number of complaints filed against Texas insurers since 1998.

Complaints dropped in all lines of insurance in fiscal year 2007.

The number of complaints against homeowners insurers fell the most — 38 percent, down to 1,842 compared with 2,968 in 2006.

Auto insurance complaints dropped .4 percent from last year, falling from 6,836 to 6,811.

While health insurance continued to lead in the number of consumer insurance complaints with 10,741 in FY2007, that number represented an 8.6 percent reduction in complaints from FY2006. Life insurance complaints showed a 6.8 percent decrease from 2006. Miscel-laneous complaints dropped 19.3 percent.

The figures in the table were provided by the Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Department of Insurance.

*Miscellaneous complaints in-clude those concerning advertising, commercial auto, business owners and general liability.
