Indian Tribe Helps Indiana County Install Flood Sirens

September 22, 2008

Carroll County, Ind., obtained a grant to install flood warning sirens along the Tippecanoe River, with the help of an American Indian tribe that applied to the federal government for the grant. County Emergency Management Director Dave McDowell says the nearly $100,000 grant will allow the county to place three emergency sirens along the river from the Oakdale Dam to the Carrol-Tippecanoe County line.

During flooding in February, sheriff’s deputies drove up and down roads along the river urging residents to evacuate. County Sheriff Tony Burns says the Eel River Tribe of Indiana applied for the grant after tribal officials approached the county offering to help.
