Darleen Madden has been elected president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas (IIAD) for a term beginning Sept.1, 2008, through August 2009.

Madden is co-owner of Glenn-Madden & Associates located in Dallas, an independent insurance agency specializing in commercial insurance. She has been in the insurance industry since 1981, receiving her Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation in 1984 and Certified Risk Manager (CRM) in 2004.

Prior to her election as president, Madden served on numerous IIAD committees over the years. Most recently, she served as treasurer and vice president.

Gregory Habay, a New York-based reinsurance broker, has joined Collins as senior vice president.

Habay most recently was a vice president and property/casualty reinsurance broker at Guy Carpenter & Co. in New York City. He also has worked in the New York offices of International Business Machines, Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. and The Constantin Group.

He also is a founding member of the U.S. Reinsurance Under 40s Group, a group of young professionals organized to provide educational, social and networking opportunities for members of the reinsurance industry within the U.S.

New York-based Navigators Group hired Paul Hennessy as president, Navigators Holdings (UK) Ltd. He will be responsible for Navigators’ operations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and will report to President and CEO Stan Galanski.

Hennessy has more than 35 years of international property/casualty underwriting and underwriting management experience. He spent 22 years with the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies in a variety of assignments, including European Commercial Customer Group manager and 10 years with CNA, including five years as Chief Underwriting Officer of CNA Europe.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry named Robert Barnes of Granbury presiding officer of the Texas Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors. Perry also appointed Jay Eisen of Beaumont to the board.

Barnes is owner and president of Bob Barnes Companies, a real estate development and management company. He is the former president and CEO of Schlotzsky’s Ltd.

Barnes is an executive committee member and past president of the Texas Restaurant Association, and a member of the National Restaurant Association. His term expires July 1, 2013. He replaces Richard Cooper of Lubbock as presiding officer.

Eisen is president of Sampson Steel Corporation. He is past president and board member of the Southeast Texas Chapter of Texas Association of Business and a member of the Texas Association of Business Political Action Committee. Eisen is appointed for a term to expire July 1, 2011.

Austin consumer and policyholder advocate, Joe K. Longley, was recently inducted into the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL) at its September meeting in Aspen, Colo.

Membership in the Academy is limited to 500 Fellows from the United States. The qualifications for membership are very high and the consideration of nominees is very extensive and thorough. The International Academy of Trial Lawyers was chartered in 1954. In general, its purposes are to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, promote reforms in the law, facilitate the Administration of Justice and elevate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession.

In 1973, Longley was the principal drafter of the private remedies found in both the Texas Consumer Protection Act and the Texas Insurance Code relating to unfair and deceptive business practices. These remedies were first enacted by the Texas Legislature when Longley was the 29 year-old chief of the Antitrust & Consumer Protection Division at the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

As an adjunct professor, he has taught Insurance Law at the University of Texas School of Law. In addition to policyholders, Longley has represented insurance professionals, such as agents, actuaries, adjusters and executives, as well as insurance companies.

The Fort Worth, Texas, Chapter of Certified Property Casualty Underwriters has presented $10,000 in scholarships to seven students in Risk Management and Insurance studies at the University of North Texas. The chapter has requested an additional $6,000 in scholarship money from the Loman Foundation.

Students receiving the CPCU scholarships are: William Hamilton; Candice Herring; Ingrid Reeves; Lauren Sandlin; Rachel Alexander-Lindsey; Audrea Slaughter; and Rachel Somerford.

In addition, UNT Risk Management and Insurance students recently raised $18,000 at the John H. Thornton Charity Golf Classic hosted by the Texas Risk and Insurance Professional Society (TRIPS). The scholarships will be awarded Dec. 3.

Peter S. Valentine was elected assistant secretary by the boards of directors of State Automobile Mutual Insurance Co. and State Auto Property and Casualty Insurance Co.

Valentine joined the State Auto Insurance Cos. in 2004 as an actuary, and currently serves as manager of business insurance actuarial. Valentine previously served Zurich North American and Royal & SunAlliance in various actuarial roles.
