Delta Celebrates 50 Years

June 1, 2009

Some 50-year-olds may wish 50 really were the new 40, but for Delta General Agency Corporation turning 50 is a milestone the Houston-based insurance wholesaler is proud to celebrate. Formed in 1959 by Houston retail agent Avrohm Wisenberg as a means of providing access by agents in Texas to certain specialized facilities, Delta continues a tradition of creating and building relationships with Texas retail agencies into its next 50 years.

Delta is “proud of the friendships and relationships with its carriers and especially with its agents and CSRs in over 200 cities throughout Texas,” said Bill Fink, president and CEO of Delta since 1997. And, said Fink, “supporting the IIAT, FIWT and numerous local associations goes to the core of building and strengthening those relationships.”

Initially, Delta represented Lloyds of London and the Jefferson Insurance Co. In 1971, Wisenberg formed Delta Lloyds Insurance Company of Houston, to provide “admitted” coverage in a more competitive and less controlled environment. Today, Delta Lloyds remains highly rated by A.M. Best & Co. with an “A-: IV” Excellent rating and a stable outlook.

“Delta experienced significant growth during the 1980s when surplus lines grew, and we were successful in adding contracts with well known companies such as Scottsdale, Nautilus, Markel, National Indemnity and Canal,” Fink explained. The agency also expanded into transportation and began focusing on personal lines for high net worth customers.

Currently, Delta serves as a wholesale intermediary for around 30 admitted standard lines and non-admitted special risk carriers.

Fink attributes the company’s success largely to its “staff of extraordinary professionals, who directly contribute to the excellence and high standards that our agents and carriers have come to expect.”

In addition to Fink, Delta is led by Len Kaplan, executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Dave Van Tiem, senior vice president and director of Commercial Lines.
