Charities Get Lucky Strike With Industry Sponsored Bowling Tournament

By | August 17, 2009

Golf is often the sport of choice when insurance groups pick an activity for their charity fundraiser. But the insurance industry in San Diego has found it can strike up just as much fun with bowling. The San Diego Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation will be hosting its second annual bowling tournament from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2009.

San Diego IICF Board Chairman Bryan Anderson said the group decided to hold its first bowling tournament last year to raise funds for local community groups because it believed more people would be able to participate.

“Not everyone is a golfer, and bowling is more scaleable in that it just takes a couple of hours instead of an entire day [like a game of golf does],” explained Anderson, also the senior vice president and regional manager for Zenith Insurance Co.

It turns out the IICF San Diego steering committee guessed correctly. Last year’s event attracted approximately 100 participants including players, volunteers and people watchers. And more importantly, the event raised approximately $8,000 that went to two charities: Impact Teen Drivers and Office Professional Training.

OPT helps to teach disadvantaged people office and clerical skills, Anderson said. This not only helps the local community, but it also benefits the insurance industry. Anderson said his employer Zenith has hired a couple of OPT trainees through the program.

The second charity, Impact Teen Drivers, works with the California Highway Patrol and insurance companies to address the No. 1 cause of accidents and fatalities among teens, which is teenage driving.

Based on registrations and feedback from last year’s bowling tournament, Anderson said he expects even better results this year. “Even though we’re facing a tough economy, we already have teams signed up and we’re expecting a good turnout,” he said.
