The verdict, recently overturned by a Florida appeals court, against a Miami high school previously found liable for the injuries of a student who survived a drunken driving crash. In 2008, a Miami-Dade jury found the Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School partially responsible for allegedly promoting the 2001 off-campus beer party where the student was drinking before driving.

The number of months of supervised parole that a North Carolina insurance agent received for a sentence after pleading guilty to five counts of embezzlement. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said that Terri Lynn Spence, of Emerald Isle, was also ordered to pay $46,773.93 in restitution and court fees. According to the investigation, Spence embezzled 43 people and 16 insurance companies. Most of the policies involved were homeowners insurance and workers compensation.

The number of building arson charges brought against a Vicksburg man by Mississippi officials. A joint investigation between the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Vicksburg Fire Department and the Vicksburg Police Department led to the arrest of Leroy Evans. Officials said Evans has been charged with multiple fires, the most recent being one in Vicksburg that burned five buildings. He has also been charged with two vehicle arsons.

The combined ratio for 2009 reported by The Main Street America Group. The Jacksonville, Florida-based property/casualty insurer said 2009 marked its fourth consecutive year of achieving an underwriting profit. The company’s commercial lines business, which accounts for 55 percent of its total premium, achieved a combined ratio of 92.5.
