The North Carolina coastal insurance rate increase implemented last year that a state appeals court says will not be rolled back. The court has declined to upset the 2008 agreement between the state’s former insurance commissioner and insurers that hiked rates on the coast up to 30 percent and cut them for others in inland counties.

The number of serious safety violations that federal inspectors say they have uncovered at Massey Energy operations since the West Virginia explosion that killed 29 miners. Inspectors visited more than 30 underground Massey coal mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia after the April 5 blast, according to records from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The decline in number of motorcycle thefts in 2009 as reported by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. A total of 56,093 motorcycles were reported stolen to law enforcement in 2009, down from 64,492 reported in 2008. Vehicle sales are also down. The top five states with the most motorcycle theft activity were: (1) California, 6,273; (2) Texas, 5,526; (3) Florida, 5,009; (4) North Carolina, 3,045; and (5) Georgia, 2,067. These five states accounted for 21,920 thefts, or 39 percent of the total.
