$14.5 Million

The amount in damages that a federal jury in South Carolina awarded to a South Carolina printing company against The Hartford insurance company in a case where the insurer believed a claim for a major fire loss in 2008 was arson. The Hartford stopped paying on the $7 million claim after it became suspicious and alleged that the owners of Genesis Press enlisted the aid of an alcoholic family member to set fires. After Genesis Press sued it for bad faith, The Hartford filed a counterclaim seeking to recover $2 million paid out before denying the insurance claim. The Greenville County circuit court jury found that The Hartford was wrong to deny the claim. The Hartford said it plans to appeal.

$2.4 Million

The amount of federal disaster assistance provided to tornado survivors in Mississippi nearly one month after the April 23-24 tornadoes, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More than 1,600 individuals, families and businesses registered for some type of assistance. More than $1.8 million has been approved for housing expenses, including temporary rental assistance, home repair costs and assistance toward replacing destroyed homes.

The amount of so-called excess profits that Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has ordered 16 workers compensation insurance companies to return to their policyholders. Under state law, insurers are required to return excess profits exceeding 5 percent. The companies have 60 days from the date of the order to return the premiums or provide policy renewal credits to policyholders.

The latest average drop in rates filed for by workers compensation insurers in Florida. This marks the eighth decrease in workers compensation rates since 2003. The cumulative overall statewide average decrease in workers compensation rates will be 64.7 percent since the 2003 reforms.
