$6 Million

Attorneys for Lloyd’s of London, which is paying jailed Texas financier R. Allen Stanford’s legal bills, say the company has spent more than $6 million on lawyers from 10 firms to defend him from allegations that he orchestrated a massive Ponzi scheme and the insurer is tired of it. Lloyd’s attorneys told U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas the company refuses to pay for Stanford’s newest criminal defense team – his fourth since being indicted nearly a year ago on charges alleging he defrauded investors out of some $7 billion. Atlas set a June 3 hearing to detail how the $6 million in legal fees for civil and criminal cases have been spent.

$10 Million

Two men suspected in a string of arson fires in East Texas earlier this year are each being held on a $10 million bond after being indicted by a grand jury. Jason Robert Bourque, 20, was indicted on five counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson. Daniel George McAllister, 22, faces two counts of arson and two counts of attempted arson. The men were charged with setting fire to Dover Baptist Church near Tyler in rural Smith County after their arrest in February and are suspected of setting up to nine other church fires. Investigators used security videotapes and shoe prints to help them link Bourque and McAllister to two of the fires, according to arrest warrant affidavits. AP

20%

A little more than 20 percent of the nation’s drivers would flunk a drivers test if taken today, according to a recent survey. The 2009 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test found that 20.1 percent of licensed Americans – amounting to roughly 41 million drivers on the road – would not pass a written drivers exam. The most knowledgeable drivers are in Idaho, Wisconsin, Montana and Kansas, while the least knowledgeable are in New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and California. Overall, findings from the fifth annual survey indicate the number of drivers with knowledge of basic road rules is decreasing, with this year’s test scores lower than last year’s (76.6 percent vs. 78.1 percent).
