Regulators say the company was using improper rates for those customers. The company paid no additional fines for the violations.

Discount that is being offered by The Hanover for Massachusetts drivers who participate in a special course in crash prevention skills and safe-driver techniques. The program, run by In Control Crash Prevention Training, is the only one of its kind certified by the state of Massachusetts and has been shown to reduce crashes by 70 percent among participating drivers, the insurer said.

Number of states that have banned texting while driving, a list that now includes Vermont after Gov. Jim Douglas signed a bill prohibiting the practice earlier this month. In addition, the Green Mountain State also banned the use of cell phones and other electronic devices while driving for 16- and 17-year-old drivers.

Number of defendants – including doctors, lawyers and the owner of a Queens, N.Y. radiology center – named in a suit by insurer Geico that alleges a massive, no-fault auto insurance fraud scheme the company says involved thousands of questionable claims for payments. Geico seeks $1.8 million in restitution and treble damages from the defendants. A company spokesman said the suit is a preview of more to come in New York, where no-fault auto insurance reform has become a major issue for insurers and lawmakers.

Increase in workers’ comp loss costs that has been recommended by the New York Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (NYCIRB). State insurance regulators plan to hold hearings this month on the proposed increases, which would go into effect Oct. 1. The approved loss costs are used by workers’ compensation insurance companies in setting premiums.
