March 19, 2012

There is less consensus when it comes to rating the performance of key players in the state’s insurance marketplace, however. Some public officials get better grades than property/casualty insurance executives as a group.

More than 50 percent rate House and Senate leaders fair or poor Agency association leaders emerge with high grades.

In rating the state’s public officials’ performance as either good, very good or excellent, agents gave a slight edge to Chief Financial Office Jeff Atwater (75.9%) over Gov. Rick Scott (70.2%). Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty scored 50% as good, very good or excellent.

Here are some of the results from a recent Insurance Journal online poll of 113 agents in the state. The poll was taken before the end of the most recent legislative session, during which lawmakers managed to pass a PIP reform bill.

Florida insurance agents overwhelmingly (81.3%) support a ban on texting while driving and think that reforming the personal injury protection (PIP) system is a top priority (72.1%).

A majority (58.9%) of agents thinks that permitting surplus lines insurers to assume some of the policies of state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp. is a good idea. A measure allowing this failed to pass.
