Texas Hailstorm Damage Estimated at $400M

July 21, 2014

Insured losses to vehicles, homes and commercial property from the June 12 hailstorm in Abilene, Texas, are expected to hit $400 million, the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) reported.

Leroy Perkins of the Perkins Insurance Agency in Abilene said the storm damage was the worst he’d seen in his 42 years in the insurance business.

“I’ve never seen cars destroyed like this,” Perkins said.

He also said total uninsured losses would be high.

The storm moved across Abilene pounding the city’s north side and downtown with baseball-size hail. Commercial buildings downtown received millions of dollars in damage to roofs, windows and structures.

All of the windows on the north side of facilities on the Hardin Simmons University campus were reportedly knocked out and roof damage was widespread over the Abilene Christian University campus.

“Insured losses just from the damaged cars and trucks in Abilene will exceed $100 million,” said Mark Hanna, a spokesman for the ICT.
