The Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) said that as of Aug. 27, the state’s insurers have received more than 1,300 claims from a rare tornado that ripped through the coastal city of Revere on July 28.
The DOI said regulators have been collecting data from insurers since mid-August on claims related to the July 28 tornado. “This data is being updated — and therefore refined — every other week,” a DOI spokesperson said. “We have some totals from the first data report, which suggests that a large number of smaller claims related to tree and debris damage have been filed.”
Overall, the latest totals as of Aug. 27 are as follows: 1,307 claims (residential and commercial property, personal and commercial auto) have been filed; 519 claims have been closed with payment; 101 claims have been closed without payment; and the incurred loss average claim is $10,693.
The tornado hit Revere, a city of about 52,000 residents, with winds of up to 120 mph. No deaths or serious injuries were reported.
Tornadoes are relatively unusual in Massachusetts, but extremely rare along the coast. The National Weather Service said it had not had a report of a tornado in Suffolk County, which includes Boston and Revere, since it began keeping tornado records in 1950.
