Best Agency to Work For – SILVER

Rogers & Gray logoRogers & Gray Insurance, a South Dennis, Mass., headquartered independent insurance agency, has a vision shaped by one core guiding principal: Do the right thing for people and clients, according to President and CEO Dave Robinson.

“It takes work to build a culture like the one we have at Rogers & Gray, and every member of our organization contributes to that culture in a positive way,” he told Insurance Journal.

The agency’s employees seem to agree that the culture is an important asset at Rogers & Gray, as they nominated the firm for this year’s Best Agency to Work For award from Insurance Journal. The agency won this year’s silver placement after employees nominated it through an online survey.

“My company understands the marketplace and the skills necessary to excel there,” wrote one employee in the survey. “They create an environment that brings out the best in us as individuals and as a group.”

One way the company invests in its people is through training and education, said Robinson. The agency has a full-time staff dedicated to the Rogers & Gray Academy who coordinate onboarding, continuing education, management skills, customer service training and professional development.

Additionally, the agency has a strong focus on performance reviews for its staff, and it rolled out a new pay-for-performance model this year, employees stated in the survey. The agency invested in a new HR Information System and management training, which allows for a bi-annual review process to reward employees based on performance.

“Making that investment was important to us,” Robinson said.

This year, the agency also completed an acquisition of Brock Insurance of Nantucket, Mass. While Nantucket was a vital market for Rogers & Gray, Robinson pointed to the culture once again as an important element of the acquisition.

“It was a natural fit,” he said.

Robinson and his brother, Michael Robinson, chairman of the board, initially entered the business through a family connection, but they remained because they enjoy the challenge of continuing to grow Rogers & Gray, Robinson said.

“With such an awesome group of team members, it’s easy to come to work every day,” he stated.

Rogers & Gray employees echoed this enthusiasm.

“Few places have this culture, and it starts from the top,” one employee wrote in the survey. “The senior management team in place is excellent, which trickles down to all employees being very happy. This truly is a special place to work.”
