The Missouri Department of Insurance reported it recovered over $9 million for consumers who filed complaints against their insurance companies during the first nine months of 2016.
In the first three quarters of 2016, the Consumer Affairs Division received 3,182 formal complaints. The top reason for complaints was claim denial followed by delays of claim processing, coverage questions and cancellation.
Some notable accomplishments:
- A St. Louis consumer was in accident and the at-fault party had the state minimums for bodily injury. The injuries she sustained surpassed the coverage limit on the at-fault party’s policy so she filed a claim under her underinsured motorist coverage. She experienced delays and filed a complaint. The company then settled, paying the policy limit of $25,000.
- An insurance company denied prior-authorization for a Missouri consumer battling cancer whose physician recommended a specific type of radiation treatment. The consumer filed a complaint. After additional review the company overturned the denial and provided coverage resulting in a total recovery of $58,181.30.
- A Southeast Missouri man and his children were out of town when their house was completely destroyed by fire. The consumer experienced delays when dealing with the company. After a complaint was filed, the company issued payment for the limits on the structure and contents: $212,660.
