One Sticky Situation

June 26, 2000

Parvez Karim of Panorama City was arrested at his place of employment and charged with three felony counts of workers’ comp fraud.

According to CDI fraud investigators, in July of 1997, the 45-year-old man filed a claim for workers’ comp benefits with Fremont Compensation Insurance Company. His claim stated that in December of 1996, while employed as a clerk at an AM/PM mini-market, he was breaking down boxes when a staple or nail from one of the boxes entered his hand. The injury allegedly required surgery at Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, Calif., to remove a portion of the object that was stuck in his hand.

After looking at the hospital records, investigators learned a new twist to the story. The records indicated that Karim told doctors he was injured at home while sewing and that a sewing needle had punctured his hand. Reports indicate that a piece of the eye of a sewing needle-not a staple or a nail-was surgically removed from Karim’s hand.

CDI investigators obtained x-rays taken of the object in Karim’s hand. They determined that the object was definitely a piece of a sewing needle. Olive View Medical Center has filed a $30,002 lien with Fremont Compensation for the cost of Karim’s treatment.
