The amount U.S. property/casualty insurers are expected to pay homeowners and businesses for third-quarter property losses resulting from a total of 11 catastrophes in 22 states, according to preliminary analysis by ISO’s Property Claim Services (PCS) unit. PCS estimates the 11 catastrophes of third-quarter 2008 generated 1.7 million claims. The five states with the greatest insured losses are Texas ($6.4 billion), Louisiana ($1.9 billion), Ohio ($1.2 billion), Kentucky ($0.4 billion), and Illinois ($0.37 billion).

The magnitude of the minor earthquake that shook East Tennessee near Maryville on Oct. 31, as measured by the U.S. Geological Survey. No damage has been reported. East Tennessee is one of the most active areas in the Southeast, but no major earthquakes have been reported.

The average auto insurance premium in South Carolina in 2006, as reported by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in the most recent figures available. That was about $61 lower than the national average. The average if North Carolina was $596 and $1,069 in Florida.

The percentage decline in workplace fatalities West Virginia between 2006 and 2007, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Sixty-one workers were killed on the job in 2007, compared with 79 deaths the previous year. All the workers killed in 2007 were male, the agency said. Highway accidents were the top cause of on-the-job deaths.

The maximum premium discount that Nationwide Insurance is offering along the Mississippi Gulf Coast to qualified policyholders who reinforce their houses against wind damage. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says Nationwide is the first insurer to offer a discount through the Wind Mitigation Discount Program. The program, which takes effect in April, offers discounts based on home construction features, including roof type, window protection and secondary water resistance.
