The jail sentence in years given a West Virginia woman found guilty of submitting false insurance claims for jewelry. According to state officials, Sherry Kay Peyton, of Williamstown, submitted two separate claims for the same piece of jewelry that she claimed she lost in May and August of 2006.

The latest number of policy removals by private insurers from the state-backed insurer Citizens Property Insurance Corp. Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty said six insurers are involved with this round of removals, which began Nov. 14: American Integrity Insurance Co. of Florida, Florida Peninsula Insurance Co., HomeWise Preferred Insurance Co., Southern Oak Insurance Co., Northern Capital Insurance Co. and Magnolia Insurance Co.

The year of the most devastating earthquake on record for South Carolina, a magnitude 7.3 that rumbled near Charleston, killing more than 100 people and destroying $5 million worth of property– worth $103 million in today’s dollars. State officials last month held an earthquake drill as part of Earthquake Awareness Week. Officials said it was a test for alert systems and gave participants a chance to check their safety plans and emergency resources. The last earthquake in South Carolina was a 2.4 magnitude quake that shook parts of Richland County in May 2007.

The dollar estimate of the more than 41,000 claims filed by Floridians for damage from Tropical Storm Fay, which swept across the state in August. The Office of Insurance Regulation said that 84 percent of the claims have been paid while 9,555 remain to be settled.

The number of employees of West Virginia’s BrickStreet Insurance likely to lose their jobs as the insurer cuts costs following the loss of its monopoly in writing workers’ compensation. The action is expected to save $2 million to $3 million, said Greg Burton, BrickStreet’s president and chief executive officer. He said the cuts result from increased competition, not the nation’s economy.
