The monetary award upheld by a Florida appellate court against a Tallahassee day care center for the parents of a 7-month-old toddler found with bites, bruises and swelling across her body. State investigators reported a “gross lack of supervision” and said the Cradle to Crayons Child Care Center was “inadequate to accommodate the safety needs” of the children.

The number of workplace deaths in North Carolina in 2008, up from 45 in 2007, according to the North Carolina Department of Labor. Labor officials said they worry that companies could be cutting corners on safety given difficult economic times.

The grant given the Mississippi Insurance Department for its wind mitigation program from the Mississippi Development Authority and Governor Haley Barbour’s office. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said the grant will be used to fund a hurricane home mitigation study that will pave the way for $25 million in hurricane home mitigation assistance for Gulf Coast homeowners.

Reinsurance intermediary Aon Benfield reported that while the maximum potential exposed insurance limits are estimated to be above $6 billion, the range of direct insured losses will be a far smaller number, most likely somewhere between $760 million and $3.8 billion, with a best estimate of $1.8 billion.
