The approximate ratio of drivers across the U.S. expected to be driving uninsured by 2010, according to the Insurance Research Council. The group says the economic downturn is expected to trigger a sharp rise in the uninsured motorist rate. The uninsured motorists problem varies from state to state. In 2007, the five states with the highest uninsured driver estimates were New Mexico (29 percent), Mississippi (28 percent), Alabama (26 percent), Oklahoma (24 percent) and Florida (23 percent).

The workers’ compensation rate increase that Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has signaled he would approve effective April 1 to cover the cost impact of the Oct. 23 Florida Supreme Court opinion in the case of Emma Murray v. Mariner Health Inc. The decision eliminated the statutory caps on attorney fees that were imposed in 2003 reforms. The increase will cost employers about $172 million.

The amount of premiums that a Florida agent pocketed while failing to place coverage for dozens of truckers, according to officials. Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink said Margarita D. Martin, owner of Martin-Argote Insurance Group, Inc., in Medley, is under investigation and has been permanently barred from the insurance industry.

That’s how much Georgia Insurance Commissioner John W. Oxendine says his office helped thousands of Georgia consumers obtain in 2008 by settling disputes with insurance companies. Oxendine said that over the past 14 years his office has retrieved $195.8 million in response to complaints.
