Amount awarded to Stephanie Baril, of Haverhill, Mass., who was severely injured when a drunken driver struck her vehicle, although her lawyer says she is unlikely to see much of the money. Attorney Daniel Chabot said the man convicted in the case is in jail and his total assets are unknown. Baril was returning to College in January 2006 when a pickup truck struck her car. Police said the truck driver, Barry Allen Bernier, was drunk and driving 100 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Value of cigarettes stolen from a warehouse in Milford, Conn. Police say the thieves who broke into Montano Cigarettes, Candy & Tobacco Inc. stole some 15,000 cartons of cigarettes in a well-planned heist. The burglars disabled lighting and security systems at the warehouse then used a ladder to scale a concrete wall and enter through a roof access hatch.

Number of people cited by Delaware police in the first days of a speed enforcement blitz conducted earlier this month. The annual Stop Aggressive Driving campaign continues through April. Drivers ticketed for going 10 mph over the speed limit will get four points on their licenses and be fined more than $77 after court costs are assessed.

Percentage of Maine drivers and passengers who wore seat belts last year, up from 79.8 percent a year earlier, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Five years ago, Maine’s seat belt use was about 72 percent. Nationally, seat belt use climbed to 83 percent in 2008, an all-time high. Several states, including Maine, have passed tougher seat belt laws that allow law enforcement officers to stop motorists whose sole offense was failing to buckle up.

Height, in stories, from which a worker’s hammer was accidentally dropped during construction of Goldman Sachs’ new headquarters in lower Manhattan. The mishap, which destroyed the rear window of a passing cab, halted construction on the 43-story tower for the second time in a year. The first stoppage came last May, when a hunk of steel plunged onto a nearby baseball field during a Little League game.
