$4.2 Million

The settlement reached by the Diocese of Savannah with Allan Ranta who alleged he was sexually molested by former priest Wayland Y. Brown between 1978 and 1983. The diocese said that the $4.24 million settlement brings to a resolution all claims Ranta has with all parties except Brown.

9.6%

The decrease in the voluntary market loss costs in North Carolina approved by state officials to be effective in April, 2010. There will be no change for the assigned risk market. The loss cost rate adjustments could save employers more than $100 million. In the voluntary market, the overall 9.6 percent loss cost decrease breaks out by classification as follows: -12% for manufacturing; -9.5% contracting; -18.4% office and clerical; -7.2% goods and services; and -2.7% miscellaneous. Federal longshore and harbor workers’ costs would go up 8.8%.

$28 Million

The funds that West Virginia can expect as part of federal legislation to control flooding across the nation. Sen. Robert C. Byrd’s office says nearly $22 million will be spent to widen Island Creek in Logan, which has been the scene of six major floods in the past 30 years. The legislation includes $1.4 million for levees on the Greenbrier River in Marlinton. A similar amount was approved the Mud River at Milton. Nearly $3 million will go to relocating McDowell County businesses and homes along the Tug Fork River. Another $807,000 will finance studies on flood control on the Cherry River at Richwood and the Upper Guyandotte River.

The number of bogus vehicle insurance claims that Georgia officials say a ringleader in a Savannah fraud ring filed against six insurers for staged accidents, collecting nearly $95,000. The companies that were defrauded include AIG/ 21st Century, Allstate, GMAC, Mercury Insurance, SafeCo and Travelers.

$15 Million

The original settlement offered by Zurich Insurance for damage to Pearl River Community College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from Hurricane Katrina, according to PRCC President William Lewis, a figure he said was far short of the school’s $40 million to $50 million in estimated damages. After two years of haggling, PRCC and Zurich have finally settled for an undisclosed sum and PRCC is moving forward on rebuilding facilities.
