The amount federal officials say a 63-year-old former bookkeeper at a Dalton, Georgia insurance brokerage embezzled from her employer. Prosecutors say Carolyn Lynn Cherry of Chatsworth forged her supervisor’s signature on company checks from 2003 to 2009 and used the checks to pay off more than $1 million in personal credit card bills from Citibank, Chase and Capital One.

The cost to BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee of the theft of computer hard drives containing personal information on hundreds of thousands of members. The insurer said as many as 500,000 customers could eventually face a risk of identity theft.

The fine that will be levied on drivers of large commercial trucks and buses if they violate a new U.S. government ban on hand-held “texting” while behind the wheel. The ban follows one issued in December for drivers of federal government vehicles.

The number of accidental workplace deaths in North Carolina last year. The North Carolina Department of Labor show said fatalities dropped from 57 in 2008. Construction fatalities remained the highest, with 14 in 2008. There were eight manufacturing deaths.
