$12 Billion

Hurricane Ike, which struck Galveston on Sept. 13, 2008, is so far the costliest weather catastrophe in Texas history, racking up nearly $12 billion in windstorm and flood insurance claims. Windstorm claims in Texas resulting from Ike totaled $9.8 billion, according to ISO. The National Flood Insurance Program says some 44,000 flood claims cost $2.175 billion, placing the storm’s total insured losses just under the $12 billion mark. The Texas Department of Insurance reported more than 800,000 windstorm claims. The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) is eventually expected to pay out $1.8 billion in Ike claims.

Louisiana reported $318 million in flood losses from Ike.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said Hurricane Ike was directly attributable to 20 deaths, most of them from drowning.

Tropical Storm Allison in June 2001 previously was Texas’ costliest weather catastrophe, causing $3.5 billion in insured losses.

Toyota Motor Corp. suspended sales in North America of eight models involved in recall and halted production of the models at plants in the United States and Canada, according to Reuters. The automaker is recalling 2.3 million vehicles in the United States to fix potentially faulty accelerator pedals, its second massive recall in four months in the U.S. The sales suspension and recall includes Toyota’s top-selling vehicle in North America, the Camry, for model years since 2007. Also included are the 2009-2010 model year RAV4, Corolla and Matrix, the 2008-2010 model year Sequoia, the 2007-2010 model year Tundra, the 2005-2010 model year Avalon and the 2010 model year Highlander. The affected North American manufacturing plants are in Indiana, Texas and Kentucky, and Ontario, Canada.

$400 Million

Agriculture officials say Arkansas farmers sustained nearly $400 million in crop losses for the 2009 growing season. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture estimated that 3,700 full- and part-time jobs were lost, as was $100 million in wages and salaries.

Soybean growers lost an estimated $204 million, and cotton and cottonseed losses were $120 million.

Rice growers lost $46 million.

Though soybeans had the greatest dollar loss, cotton producers had the largest loss as a percentage of gross revenue. AP
