Amount sought in a lawsuit filed by the wife of a Bronx, New York man who was fatally shot by a police officer while defending his stepdaughter. The suit names the city and Officer Michael Falcione. Sandra Rodriguez says her late husband, Alex Figueroa, confronted several men he believed had harassed his 18-year-old stepdaughter. The 2008 faceoff in a Bronx apartment building turned into a brawl that included the wife, the stepdaughter and a friend. Plainclothes officers said Figueroa had a bat and they feared he might attack them. Witnesses told police the officers ordered him to freeze and drop the bat. One officer then fired, fatally wounding Figueroa.

Amount of premiums allegedly stolen by Richard Pisacane, former head of Bayonne N.J.-based Northern Financial Group, a now-defunct insurance agency for Lincoln General Insurance Co. Pisacane was indicted on the charges last month.

Number of insurance fraud arrests last year that stemmed from investigations by the New York State Insurance Fund, the state’s largest workers’ compensation insurer. The investigations yielded $16.6 million in recoveries and estimated savings.

Estimated amount of damage to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore caused by two recent snowstorms. The damage will delay the attractions’ opening by several weeks. Insurance adjusters declared the Maryland aviary a total loss, the African aviary was heavily damaged and more than 60 trees or large limbs fell under the heavy snow. A long-eared owl is still on the loose. The zoo, was scheduled to re-open on March 1.

Amount awarded to a teenage girl who was allegedly raped by a taxi cab driver in 2007. The girl sued the alleged attacker, Gerald Terry, Metro Taxi of West Haven and the taxi driver, Jason Hylton. The lawsuit alleged Hylton was supposed to drive the girl from a school in North Haven to her Naugatuck home in his Metro Taxi cab, but he asked Terry, a convicted sex offender, to transport the girl instead. Metro Taxi says it plans to appeal the verdict.
