The number of policyholders out of 452 investigated who received a larger discount on their home insurance premium for storm mitigation steps than they should have from Citizens Property Insurance Corp. The state-backed insurer reported that 39 aren’t getting enough. Citizens said policyholders who owe more would be told they can fortify their homes to receive the discounts or they will have to pay higher premiums. The investigation is part of a review by Citizens after there were reports of widespread fraud and abuse in the mitigation program.

The number of motorists that have been cited for speeding in Bluff City, Tenn., since new traffic cameras were installed in December. They are accused of speeding through a 1.3-mile stretch of U.S. 11E that is a 45 mph zone. The citations went out during the first six weeks after the cameras began operating. The city stands to collect $150,000 worth of fines and court costs from them.

The maximum number of cars that a funeral procession may have in Gulfport Mississippi under new restrictions set forth by police. Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford said the decision was made over concerns about public safety, manpower and liabilities. The funeral escorts are handled by on-duty officers. The only exceptions are for first-responders who die on duty or soldiers killed in combat. The decision met heavy criticism from some who feel deprived of a traditional show of respect. Others say the change will reduce traffic congestion and the risk of accidents

The settlement agreed to by a former University of Georgia with the school’s athletic association over an insurance policy dispute. Decory Bryant’s settlement came weeks after an Athens-Clarke County judge dismissed his lawsuit that claimed the athletic association failed to secure him a $500,000 insurance policy before he suffered a career-ending injury. Athletic association attorney Ed Tolley said it was a sign the “athletic association had committed to helping” Bryant all along. Bryant’s football career ended in 2003 with a neck injury. He claimed that a school official failed to complete the paperwork that would have paid him if an injury ended his career.
