New Builder Construction

Nuts & Bolts: Abram Interstate Insurance Services Inc. in Rocklin, Calif., is offering a new owner builder course of construction policy in California. Coverage is written on a homeowners HO-3 Form. Builders Risk policies can be converted to a full homeowners’ policy upon completion.

Dollars: Coverage limits start at $300,000. Total insured value of more than $5 million is subject to approval.

General Liability

Nuts & Bolts: DFR Insurance Services Inc. has a market for general liability for general contractors, artisans and roofers. National Contractors Insurance Co. Inc., a risk retention group (NCIC) specializes in general liability insurance for the licensed general and artisan contractor.

Dollars: $1 million to $2 million. Minimum premium for most classes is $1,500 and $3,000 in most states, general contractors and roofers higher.

States: Ariz., Calif., Colo., Fla., Ill., Nev., N.M., N.Y., Texas, Utah and D.C.

Carrier: National Contractors Insurance Co., a risk retention group. Nonadmitted.

Tuition Protector

Nuts & Bolts: Markel’s Tuition Protector program protects schools’ revenues and is designed to eliminate the financial burden families face when students are forced to withdraw prior to term completion. It provides comprehensive coverage for virtually any event that may cause a student’s withdrawal.

Limits: Set a fee level to be insured. Minimum premium average $10,000.

States: All except Alaska and Hawaii.

ART Facilities

Nuts & Bolts: Darwin Professional Underwriters Inc. has management and professional liability coverage for alternative risk transfer (ART.) facilities, including captives, risk retention groups, reciprocals and exchanges, as well as privately held non-rated insurance companies (i.e., insurance companies without an A.M. Best financial strength rating). Darwin has partnered with Ohio-based Quadrant Insurance Managers as its underwriting partner. The product, A.R.T. management and professional liability insurance, is geared towards ART facilities that offer property and casualty, workers’ compensation, and life, accident and health solutions with $250 million or less in annual gross written premium. Coverage is made up of directors and officers liability, and employment practices liability.

Dollars: $1 million to $10 million on primary or excess basis. Minimum premium is $25,000.

States: All

Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Providers

Nuts & Bolts: Stateco’s addiction treatment providers program with Westport Insurance (now part of the SwissRe organization) is available in 44 states. Coverage is specialized for alcohol and substance abuse treatment providers and is written on a package policy form.

Dollars: General liability is $1 million per occurrence/$3 million annual aggregate on an occurrence form, with no deductibles. It includes premises medical payments and a GL enhancement form. Professional liability is $1 million per occurrence/$3 million annual aggregate, written on an occurrence form with no deductibles. Sexual abuse and molestation is $1 million per occurrence/$2 million annual aggregate with no deductibles, written on an occurrence form; property coverage to $20 million per location total insured value including bodily injury; equipment breakdown, property of others and a property enhancement form; auto liability and auto physical damage to $1 million CSL for owned, leased or rented vehicles, including UM/UI and PIP (where required); inland marine, crime, employee dishonesty, employee benefits liability and umbrella coverages are also available as part of the package. Coverage for employed or contracted physicians is offered on a stand-alone basis, with limits of $1million per occurrence/$3 million annual aggregate on a claim-made basis. The program offers coverage to residential treatment programs, outpatient treatment programs and methodone clinics.
