DEL. COMM. WON’T SEEK RE-ELECTION:

February 9, 2004

Delaware Insurance Commissioner Donna Lee Williams has announced that she will not seek re-election to a fourth term. Williams has decided to devote more time to her family. A Republican first elected in 1992, Williams is the first woman to serve as Delaware’s insurance commissioner and the third-longest serving insurance commissioner in the country. Her current term expires in January 2005. Williams said she has found it more difficult recently to balance the demands of her job with her family responsibilities. “The time has come to put my family first,” she said. Williams said freeing herself from the demands of a political campaign would allow her to devote more time to issues facing state insurance regulators. Those issues include implementation of recent changes in Medicare provisions and a proposed new operating agreement between CareFirst and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware. Matthew Denn, a Democrat and former chief counsel to Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, has filed as a candidate in the commissioner’s race. Other possible contenders include Karen Weldin Stewart, a Democrat who ran against Williams in 2000, and Republican Jeffrey Cragg.
